About sow stalls...
A sow stall is a metal crate used to house a pregnant pig for up to
16 weeks at a time. The pig cannot walk or turn around while in the
crate. She can only stand up or lie down on the bare concrete floor.
Kept in semi-darkness, she will repeatedly chew at the metal bars
around her in frustration. This severe confinement leads to abnormal
behaviour, leg weakness and injury.
Towards
the end of her pregnancy the sow is placed in a farrowing crate
to give birth. She still can't turn around and is unable to build
a nest for her piglets. Depriving the sow of her normal mothering
behaviour causes frustration, stress and depression. Her piglets
are taken away from her after only four weeks. She is immediately
impregnated again and returned to the sow stall. The cycle of abuse
starts all over again!
In
New Zealand, 20,000 pregnant pigs are housed in sow stalls.
